Notes

The table has been compiled using the 2001 Census publications Key Statistics for urban areas in England and Wales Table KS01 (released 17 June 2004), Key Statistics for Settlements and Localities Scotland Table KS01 (released 25 March 2003) and Northern Ireland Census 2001 Key Statistics for Settlements Table KS01 (released 10 February 2005).  The names and populations of all urban areas and urban sub-divisions recognised as towns with city status were extracted and included in the list.  The year the city status was awarded is the taken from the date recorded on the official letters patent and may differ from the year city status was actually announced.
